About the Competition

Meet The Competitors

Similar to the popular, “Shark Tank” competition, entrepreneurs, students, alumni, business people, and churches were given the opportunity to develop and present a business plan that would meet a societal need, provide financial sustainability and integrate the Christian faith.

 

First Prize was $10,000 plus Professional Business Coaching toward starting your social enterprise or accelerating an existing business that benefits your local community.

 

Second Prize was $7,500, and Third Prize was $5,000. Business Coaching was awarded to the top three finalists.

Meet The Judges

Robert Belmont

Robert Belmont is a twenty five (25) year plus healthcare financial service executive. Mr. Belmont has held numerous mid- and senior level management finance and operation positions in various Healthcare Maintenance Organization (HMOs) and large medical groups that provided both primary care and specialty group services generating excess of $100 million dollars in revenue. Since 2001, Mr. Robert Belmont has served as founding President & CEO of Sunnyside Terrace (SST), a real estate development company with a focus on multifamily and affordable housing. Mr. Belmont has overall responsibility for the supervision of all company operations, business development & marketing. Mr. Belmont holds both a Masters in Public Administration concentrating in both public health & government affairs from Baruch College in New York City and an accounting & business administration degree from Delaware State University. He is married to Dr. Brenda Belmont, Ph. D and has two (2)daughters Carter (a High Honors graduate from Hampton University) & Brittany (Graduate at Penn State University).

Charles Eapen

Mr. Charles (Chuck) Eapen is a disciple of Jesus Christ and trusted business advisor with expertise in technology, operations and organizational development from a biblical perspective. His 25+ years of corporate experience spans various commercial and retail sectors including: telecom, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and professional trades. He has held the positions of President, COO and CEO for a handful of private firms in in the tech and service sectors. Presently, he serves as President/CEO of C12 Group Northern New Jersey where he counsels fellow CEOs and senior executives generating revenues from $1MM to over $500/annum in the disciplines corporate strategy, organization development, fiscal stewardship, operational excellence and business-as-ministry. Mr. Eapen holds a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering (Stony Brook University) and a Masters in Old Testament (Nyack College); he is a published technical author and speaker. He lives in Bergen County with his wife, Betty, and son, Zachariah.

Steven Gomez

Steven Gomez is the Executive Director at Greater Newark Enterprises Corporation (GNEC) a 501(c)(3) non-profit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that provides financing, small business counseling, and training services to minority and women entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout northern NJ. Steven is the Advisory Board Chair for the Seton Hall University Stillman School of Business Market Research Center, a Board Member for the Business Outreach Center Network/BOC Capital in New York City, an advisory board member for PHAS INC in Paterson, and a member of the Collaborative Action Newark Advisory Board at Rutgers Business School.

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is a life long resident of the Silk City, and current City Councilman (1st ward). He is an accomplished restauanteur and has parlayed his experience as a former profressional quarterback in the Arena Football League into running an upscale bar and restaurant in the City of Paterson. His hands-on approach to running his business has given him invaluable experience as an entrepreneur, providing him with first hand insights into what it takes to launch, grow and scale new enterprises.

Kate Muldoon

Kate Muldoon is the Regional Director of the William Paterson SBDC. She joined the William Paterson University SBDC following an extensive career in the business world, and she applies this knowledge and experience towards the SBDC’s goal of continually developing and refining the tools and resources requisite to contemporary small business success in today’s competitive and increasingly diverse and technologically driven environment. As part of a national and statewide SBDC system, the William Paterson SBDC has access to a tremendous nation-wide resource base of expertise, enabling us to acquire expert information and quickly implement best practices to bolster New Jersey’s small businesses. In addition to William Paterson University, we are proud and thankful to be funded by the City Of Paterson’s Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ), the Small Business Administration, the State of NJ, and in-kind donations and grants from various other local business and organizations.

June Tomori

June Smith Tomori is a professional in the publishing, media, education and business arenas. June is an entrepreneur at heart and has worked with a multitude of brilliant professionals at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Simon and Schuster, the New York Department of Education, and the Eagle Academy for Young Men among others. Currently her work at the City of Paterson Housing Authority spring boarded PHASINC, (Paterson Housing Authority Success Incubator) a small business incubator designed to jumpstart workforce and economic development within Paterson. Collaboration to create PHASINC with Passaic County Community College, the Small Business Development Center, Greater Newark Enterprise Corporation and Columbia Bank has yielded new excitement and rejuvenation around entrepreneurship and sustainability. A former Executive Director in Paterson, JSmith Tomori is a graduate of Rutgers University, she holds double B.A. degrees in Journalism and Mass Communications; a mini-MPA from Rutgers, and a Business Incubation Management Certification from the International Business Innovation Association.
